It is associated with the concept of &#8220;self-preservation&#8221; as a natural feeling that drives every animal to look after its own survival. [1] The philosopher stated that this type of love is prominent in the stage where our faculties are not developed, so it is still considered one of the beasts. It is considered &#8220;always good and always according to order&#8221; because it is not malevolent because amour de soi as self-love does not involve the pursuit of self-interest at the expense of others. One is justified in disregarding the well-being of others if one&#8217;s own well-being is materially threatened. Emotion does not compare itself with others, but is solely concerned with considering itself as an absolute and valuable being. It is related to the awareness of one&#8217;s future and can restrain the present impulse. Rousseau contrasts it with amour-propre, that kind of self-love, found in Thomas Hobbesphilosophy, in which one&#8217;s opinion of oneself depends on what others think and which arises only with society.<\/p>\n<p>Rousseau suggested that amour de soi was lost in the transition from the pre-social state to society, but could be restored through the use of &#8220;good&#8221; institutions created by the social contract. This renewed passage from the state of nature to the civilized state would lead man to favor justice over instinct.
